A Difference in Perspective: A Dichotomy in how Media Portrays Scalping.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/65172294@N00/268829443      The topic of scalping is a complex one. Popular public sentiment about the topic is all but decided, with pretty much every community it affects bemoaning the act, and many stores and legislators taking direct action to prevent it. What I find very interesting is that there is a large dichotomy between how scalping is portrayed to and by the public and how it is portrayed by economists in academic papers. This difference goes beyond the usual academic rigor. There is a fundamental disagreement between the two groups, and the media reflects that. In an economic sense, scalping is a natural result of the economic environment in which it takes place. Some economists even argue that the secondary market and scalping serve to increase the efficiency of the market overall. In a societal sense, scalping is a horrible practice that deprives the "true fans" of the product or event. In this blog post, I hope to highlight how...

Analysing the Print and Online Editions of the Financial Times.

Image
Introduction The Financial Times is a very prestigious long running financial news outlet based in the United Kingdom. It is one of the worlds leading authorities on business and financial news. It is also a very niche and intellectual publication, assuming its audience to have a decent understanding of both business and market fundamentals. I was interested in how this type of publication might differ in its transition to digital formats verses its more mass appeal counterparts, and if a financial publication would also have some unique differences due to the rapidly changing nature of financial markets. The print paper is clearly a focus for the company as well, as evidenced by the fact they often post the front page on their social media accounts, as seen here . For this purpose I took an in depth look at the November 14/15th 2025 issue of FTWeekend. I went over 3 stories in the main paper, and the two front page stories in the Life & Arts and House & Home sections of t...

An analysis of the marketing campaign for Europa Universalis V

Image
An analysis of the marketing campaign for Europa Universalis V Paradox Interactive is well known for their grand strategy games, that generally are focused on various historical time periods. The largest of all their series is Europa Universalis. Europa Universalis, or "EU" is a series that was originally based on the board game of the same name. The previous title EU4 was a standout release in the series. EU5 is the long awaited sequel for a game with a very passionate and dedicated fan-base. The game takes place from the start date of April 1, 1337 to the unconfirmed end date "sometime in the 19th century", which is a date extension from the previous games start date of November 11, 1444 to the end date of January 2, 1821. Paradox knows that they their fan-base is passionate about history and has leaned into this heavily in its marketing for the game. I believe this marketing has been very effective and is an excellent example of targeting you most passionate fan...

The Information I consume.

My three main sources of information are Youtube, Propublica, and Common Dreams. These are my go-to because I think it provides a good mix of digestibility with accuracy. Propublica and Common Dreams are reputable traditional news outlets that I think represent situations with a very high degree of accuracy(if from a progressive perspective). While youtube obviously varies highly in quality I try to mainly follow creators that I think have an above average standard of accuracy, and youtube is increasingly becoming a platform for independent journalists to discuss current events. Its often a lot more digestible to learn about current happenings in the form of a 10-30 minute video presentation than reading a traditional news article. Personally I am very concerned about the absolute deluge of disinformation that is spread and consumed in the modern day. Its one of my primary motivations for becoming a journalists. While it depends on the topic, if something I learn is important to m...

About Me

My name is Riley Scott Johnson. I am going to LBCC as a way to change careers. I have actually gone to LBCC before, and ended up dropping out part way into my second term. After that I went into Information Technology, and self taught myself the certifications.I haven't bothered to renew the certifications but I was previously Comptia A+ and Comptia Network+ certified. In my free time I mostly play card games, usually Magic the Gathering or Yugioh. I also love video games, especially grand strategy games or "map painters". I am coming back to school to study Journalism, and I hope to someday become an investigative journalist. I was inspired to go into journalism because of just how much is constantly happening in our modern world, and I think a lot of traditional forms of news media are ineffective in the modern day, not to mention how low trust is in the media for the average person. I also feel like there is a gap in media coverage for many financial/business topics fr...
